Astana hosted the National Methane Forum, which was held as part of the VII Eurasian business forum “Green Energy & Waste Recycling Forum”, where more than 200 experts from Central Asia, Europe and the USA took part. The forum has been organized annually since 2016. It brings together professionals operating in the field of green energy and waste processing, and provides them with a platform for sharing ideas, experiences, good practices, and technologies for disposal, recycling, and utilization of waste.
Aibek Tulepbergenov, EY expert at Climate Change and Sustainability Services, was a speaker at the forum and shared his opinion on the topic “Methane is a carbon unit of the Kazakhstan Emissions Trading System”. During his presentation, Aibek noted that the issue of including the sectors of agriculture and waste, as well as methane as a covered gas in the national emission trading system (KazETS) must be considered after the implementation of all mechanisms that trigger the appropriate functioning of the ETS market. In addition, the regulation of methane emissions can be implemented within the framework of alternative government regulation tools, like direct regulation or offsetting system.
